I recently watched Sia’s music video “Elastic heart”.
Yes, the rather controversial one with Shia LaBeouf and the talented teen dancer Maddie Ziegler.
It was just one of those songs i encountered when I was listening to random songs on YouTube (while writing my essay).
My first time watching Elastic heart, I couldn’t quite make since of the message.
Being the person who always had difficulty appreciating “art” from classic paintings to modern arts, i didn’t try hard to understand the deeper message of the video.
But then I scrolled down and saw a comment.
It said how this music video was illustrating young Sia’s relationship with her father who struggled with alcohol addiction.
The young Sia (Maddie) wanted to save her father (Shia) so much, but there is so much a loved one can do. And addiction tore apart the lives of the loved one too.
Whether this is true or not, it made me cry immediately.
As someone who struggles with eating disorder, it is not an overstatement to say that I am addicted to food.
And no matter how much my family tries their best to attempt saving me, I can’t recover until I take control of my life.
I know first hand that love by itself doesn’t cure addiction. Like how it doesn’t cure cancer.
The music video remind me of how helpless both the addicted and the loved ones can feel, despite their best efforts.
